My 18 year old cat has just started swinging at the metal light pull on the bed side table. She started in the spring. We it hits the glass dome globe and rings. We are not sure what made her start. It is funny, though. I just had a thought, on the weekend, about it. We have been aware, for the last 3 months or so that she is loosing her hearing. Not completely gone but definitely decreased. I wonder if she likes to ring the lamp because she can hear the sound or feel it. She takes her cues from the other cat when it is food time. She has always responded quickley to questions we ask her. If we are not looking at her face now she doesn't respond. I jokingly told my husband and son that she is lip reading. I wonder if they are capapble of that. She has always been very much a people cat. We got her from a cat rescue place. She was very ill when they got her so she was hand fed and cared for in her kitten hood. I know this makes them more apt to love their people. As we added a small dog and then another cat she decided, after a few days, that they were staying and she made sure they knew who was boss. She missed them if they were not around. After our dog died she wondered around the house for 2 or 3 days looking for him. She gave up after that. I do worry about our other cat when this older one dies. With the one being 18 and the other 13 I don't know if she will survive without her. Every where the older one sleeps during the day you can be guaranteed that the other one will show up and snuggle with her.
This is the only problem with pets. It hurts so much when they die. I am at a point that I don't think I can deal with it any more after these two. We are also on a tight income since I have been on disablity pension and the vet bills are just too much for us. I will not have a pet if I can not afford to look after them. Both my husband and I come from homes that always had a cat and dog. We can not imagine a home with out them.
