Hi Rachael, our labrador/staffordshire mix is nearly 2 years old. He has been for health checks and has been declared healthy! The thing is, Misty goes through times (lasting up to 2 days) where he will get sick during the night, usually only the once. It's a type of white foam that he brings up. He has never had a big appetite and he's a fussy eater so he doesn't eat anything out of the ordinary. I can't find any sort of pattern to these periods of time when he starts getting sick. Have you any ideas? Also, one more thing just out of curiosity, can dogs recognise their brothers or sisters on meeting after a few years? Has been a topic of debate! Thanks a million for your help.

Hi Yvonne

How long has this been going on for?  Is he vaccinated?  Is there any bile in it or is it followed by diarrhoea?  Did Misty have any blood work done?  I would recommend blood work and possibly x-rays (with and without contrast).  Misty can also have an ultrasound scan done.  This will allow the vet to visualize the internal organs, the thickness of the stomach wall and intestines and may be able to detect any abnormalities. There are many things that can cause vomiting, such as problems with motility, irritable bowel, foreign bodies, kidney/liver problems, worms, gastric ulcers, hiatal hernia, and much more.

Sometimes vomiting up white foam actually occurs when a dog coughs.  So you must determine if Misty is coughing or actually vomiting.  i would definitely recommend having misty worked up further.

As for dogs recognising their brothers and sisters after a few years, it is hard to say.  I have seen dogs that recognise each other after a few months to a year, so I suppose that it is possible.

I did not mention that you should consider changing Misty's diet and possibly feeding times.  You can try changing the diet to something like Royal Canin Intestinal or Hills I/D.  They are both bland, highly digestible diets.  You can also try raising up the food and water dishes.
