Hi all
I am a new to the hamster world and have experienced a problem of getting bedding for my hamster (I only have him for a week now). I know wood shavings are a big No, but I cant find any other suitable and safe bedding for my pet in Dublin! In a weeks time I have visited 4 pet shops and all of them only stock wood shavings or hay. When I asked if they have any other bedding, I've received a funny look with a question, what else can it be used for hamsters?!
Here is a link of the alternatives I am looking for http://hubpages.com/hub/What-is-the-best-type-of-hamster-bedding Any idea where I can get them?
P.s. I have checked on line shops, but as the bedding is heavy, the postage costs are far too hight to be considered.
Any advice please?
Hi Sunshine,
Why not check what type of wood that is used in the woodshavings in pet shops as only two materials ( pine and cedar wood) where shown to possibly be harmful. To be very honest I have kept hamsters as pets and breed them in later years and I have never had an issue with sawdust but you could look at just using shreded paper as an alternaite as it is easy to come by if you know anyone working in an office and in many ways works as well as sawdust does.. Also straw and hay could be used or natuaral kitty litter with a soft area of fluff for sleeping. I would say stay away from major brands that claim the moon and stars as often you will find especially when it comes to animal products there is a large marketing machine driving the promotion and little truth behind the articles that are released.
Hope this helps a little.
