You need to STOP feeding him that crap! He needs to eat a good quality dog food like Royal Canin or Hills etc. Its expensive but you measure how much food they eat so he can't overeat. Then you also need to choose a diet food so go to the vets or pet shop ASAP!

I am taking care of my mother's elderly Shih Tzu, Munchy. She gained a lot of weight when my mother died as people felt sorry for her and gave her lots of extra food. We brought her to the vet and this was the diet and excercise plan we came up with.

1. Feed Burns High Oats (or similar high quality diet food)

2. Measure out the correct amount according to the feeding guidelines.

3. Feed the amount for her ideal weight NOT for her current heavy weight.

4. Do not give her any human food or extra treats.

5. If you really must treat her, give her pieces of carrot. (I thought this was a stupid suggestion, but Munchy enjoys munching slices of carrot)

6. Get her moving as much as possible: extra walks, play with him in the garden etc. We were advised that a few short walks a day was better than on long one for weight loss.

Hope this helps. Good luck with the diet!

Defo listen to the guidance that you have been given here. The thing to remember is stop giving her human food its just not good for her. When she is back to normal weight and enjoys regular walks then fire ahead and treat her with SMALL tip bits. You don't need to crazy and buy special diet dog foods as I know this can be very hard on the pocket instead do a little research on the oil and protien content of dog foods and ensure that she gets the right mix. You don't need tins they are just like sprinkles on ice cream once she gets a complete dried dog food mix she will be fine but remember get her out there walking. Its good for both of you and you will be amazed at the results themed with a healty diet. Hope this helps.
